The New Orleans Blues & Swing – November 5th- 12th, 2022

Quiana Lynell & Zahria Sims Quintet- New Orleans

A New Orleans evening at its best with the Sarah Vaughan competition winner- Quiana Lynell (New Orleans)!

The twenties in New Orleans are characterized by small clubs for entertainment and dancing. The music also washed over the river ships on the Mississippi.

The singers joined small groups of musicians, quartets, quintets and with them they performed in a repertoire that included musical arrangements of work songs, songs from the church, religious songs and hymns, and of course songs based on melancholy blues.

All of these will be brought by the Zahria Sims Quintet, who brings an excellent instrumental ability to host the singer Quiana Lynell with her uncompromising vocal ability, combined with energy and human warmth that Quiana is very much characterized by. New Orleans evening at its best!

Quiana Lynell is a unique talent.  She possesses the maturity of a well-seasoned vocalist while having a forward-thinking approach to creativity, all while making her audience feel at home as she does her thing.”

— trumpeter/composer Terence Blanchard

Quiana Lynell made her salient mark on the jazz-and-beyond musical world as a wise, heartfelt, warm vocalist whose voice is singular in its soul, intensity, ecstasy, and outright spiritual courage.  Blanchard said his take on hearing her for the first time was “a serious vocal discovery.” He added, “Quiana Lynell is already a vocal presence. When I first heard her sing, my initial thought was ‘Who are you, where have you been, and why am I just hearing you now? I realized I was someone who wanted to bend and break rules.” Terence Blanchard continued to champion her, including inviting her to sing at last year’s International Jazz Day show with Herbie Hancock.”

Lynell’s goal: to put together a collection of songs that would be a gumbo pot of music.
