The best of the gospel “hits”; The secular ones, with a more bluesy tone, and the more religious ones, whose texts are taken mainly from the stories of the Bible, Performed by the singer Monique Thomas, who has the warm and big alto voice and her enthusiasm that knows no bounds – as if she were a giant preacher.
Many of the giants of jazz, such as Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin and also James Brown, were greatly influenced by gospel and undercurrents such as soul and rhythm and blues.
Gospel music is religious music that includes several genres and is written to express personal or public faith and at the same time produce a Christian religious alternative to secular popular music.
Monique Thomas, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is a unique vocalist, who’s specialty is being fluent in many different styles of music. From jazz to soul, gospel to pop, this multi-faceted singer can switch genres in a heartbeat, while maintaining her artistic integrity and bringing something fresh to whatever she sings.
Monique started singing at the age of 2 and was always involved in musical activities such as choirs, and marching band and was even the pianist for her high school jazz band. While living in the US, Monique has had the opportunity to hone her skills in different clubs in and around New York as well as performances on television and in jazz festivals.
Strictly the Bristol-based guitarist is Denny Ilett has been playing professionally since the mid-80s, perfecting a range of guitar styles across jazz, blues, rock and swing that enable him to shine in almost any context. As Artistic Director and joint founder of the Bristol Jazz and Blues Festival he has brought to the city great names.
Denny Ilett is rare commodity – a virtuoso British guitarist and a talented writer/arranger, who has honed his chops not on the UK scene but rather by playing and touring with some of New Orleans finest including Lillian Boutte and members of such notable bands as The Meters, Dr John and the Harry Connick Jnr Big Band.
