A roaring drum show of love and rhythm in honor of legendary melodic drummer Max Roach!
Max Roach was a central figure in bringing the drum set to center stage as a solo instrument – playing melody with it, and not just accompanying other instruments. He shined as a drummer, playing alongside the jazz giants of the 20th century, and was a cornerstone of the Bebop and Hard Bop scenes. He introduced political elements into his music, criticizing segregation in pieces such as the “Freedom Now Suite”.
In the Hot Jazz series, two outstanding drummers will come together (with two sets of drums on stage!) to celebrate Max’s work. New York’s Sylvia Cuenca, who played for 17 years alongside famous trumpet player Clark Terry, and the king of Post Bop – saxophonist Joe Henderson – will perform with Shay Zelman, one of Israel’s leading jazz musicians.
Both Sylvia and Shay fell in love with Max Roach’s famous album with Clifford Brown, which led them both to picking up drumsticks in the first place.
Performing with them will be American saxophonist and flautist, Justin Robinson, who has played with Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars, Abbey Lincoln, Roy Hargrove, the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band and more. He recorded four albums, some with the acclaimed label Verve; and the talented jazz pianist Tamir Hendelman, who has recorded and performed with various artists such as Barbara Streisand and John Pizzarelli. Tamir is also a senior member of Jeff Hamilton’s Trio and the Clayton-Hamilton Orchestra.
