Max wasn’t a Tiger, nor an Elephant. Max was a very talented drum player, who loved to play Music on his drums!

Max Roach discovered that he could make all sorts of different sounds by stretching and releasing the drumhead, and that’s what he loved best – Playing melodies on his drums. He also loved pounding them to make complicated beats and rhythms. Max put together a whole orchestra of drummers and percussionists (without a violin, or even a saxophone). He was groundbreaking, curious and very, very special. He bumped the drums from the back of the stage – straight to the front!
